Mother's Day

May 11, 2008 - Happy Mother's Day! For today's post I will, of course, start with a public declaration of my appreciation for my mother. After all, she welcomed Joe and I into her house with open arms and has supported all of our goals. While we try to be considerate, our stuff, our plants, and our animals have all but taken over her house and yard, and she has graciously allowed it. We are ever so appreciative of all she has done and continues to do for us. And for all those who think we're crazy for living with our mother/mother-in-law - it's really not so bad. We have enjoyed sharing resources, chores, and meals, and it has really enabled us to have the freedom to choose our path in our own time. So thanks, mom.

My mother's request for the day was that we all go to the pancake breakfast at the firehouse in Elizaville. It wasn't exactly an organic breakfast, but we had a good time.

After that, Mom, Liz, Natalie, and I went to the farmers market in Rhinebeck - it was the first one of the season and I've been waiting for it for months! We picked up some spinach pesto, pac choy, vegetable chips, asparagus, apples, and rhubarb. Here's some pics of the outing -

Back at the house, we had more work to do in the yard - the work is really never ending. I keep thinking that once everything gets in the ground there will be less to do, but I have a feeling that's not going to be the case. We put the corn in today - it's fenced in, as is everything else, to keep the chickens out. And we put down newspaper with mulch on top to keep the weeds down.

Then I also put some celery, celeriac, and collard greens into the ground. These are veggies I bought at Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens because I didn't get any seeds. Hopefully one day I will seed everything myself, but this year I had to make choices. And I have to say, it's a nice change to be able to just plunk a few transplants in the ground and be done with it.

All the warm weather plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil) are getting real close to ready to go in the ground. We moved them to a more sunny spot today and they are looking sooo happy - and like real plants you might find at a store!

As you can see, we spent most of the weekend working outside in the garden. The house plans are still in progress, we should have some elevation plans to review within the next few days. We are working on getting the electricity removed from the house so that we can get a demolition permit. I'm quickly realizing how much time and research every step of the project is going to take. It can be a bit stressful, but I'm trying to learn how to calm down and just sort of go with the flow. A good life lesson for me I suppose.
