Engineer on Board

May 7, 2008 - As you know, Joe and I have been slaving over our house plans for weeks. Originally, we drew our own plans, thrilled to be able to create EXACTLY what we wanted. Then we realized we would be needing real architectural plans to show the building inspector (and while I can draw some impressive floor plans, I have to admit that a full set of plans is a bit out of my range) so we started looking online. We each spent hours trying to find a plan out there that looked at least close to our tiny dream house, but to no avail. Enter Kelly Clark. Turns out that my dear friend from age 7 is an engineer. Of course I knew this already, but I did not know that meant that Kelly not only could but would LOVE to draw us up a full set of plans. So on Sunday, Kelly and I spent the afternoon gabbing about design ideas and walking around the existing house deciding on dimensions, rooflines, and window placements. It was great. Not only is Kelly rescuing us from house plan hell, but it's just a whole lot of fun to be working on this with such a good friend and someone as excited to be doing it as we are. Needless to say, since Sunday I have spent hours with my new best friends: pencil, ruler, and graph paper. Kelly is back in Seattle, but she and I will most likely speak almost every night until we have the most efficient, beautiful, and structurally sound building you've ever seen. On paper that is.

Of course this doesn't mean we don't have time to run over to our new property and knock some walls down every now again. It's amazing how exhilerating that can be.

And then burning stuff is always a good way to relieve some stress :)

Don't worry, we're very careful with fire. Next time I have to remember the marshmallows though.

Overall, things are progressing nicely. We can't really do too much more demolition until we've got our permit, which we can't get until we have our plans done. So it's crunch time on those plans. But now we have an engineer on board, so we're set.
